The forgotten garage door?
Side hinging has traditionally been the method of hanging doors and gates but over time different options have become available. While ninety nine percent of homes feature side hinging for front and interior doors when it comes to the garage most are using a different opening method to side hinged garage doors. It seems strange how this transformation has taken place but changes in materials and installation constraints have led to many alternatives that seem to fit the job better. The up and over garage door is used in the majority of circumstances although roller doors and sectional doors are becoming more popular not least for their insulating properties.
But have side hinged garage doors really had their day? The very advances in materials and design techniques used in other types of garage door now work in their favour, you can purchase insulated side hinged garage doors which compete with other types of door insulation wise and can be more competitive price wise. There are now electric kits available for side hinged doors allowing automatic opening and closing via remote control.
Material wise most of us think of timber side hinged garage doors as the norm but many new materials are now used in construction including steel, ABS, GRP and foam filled insulated panels. These new materials greatly increase the choices available for this type of door. The room needed to swing the doors open will always be an issue if space is at a premium at the front of your garage but in many other respects it is worth taking a look at side hinged doors
