What You Should Know Before Buying Outdoor Lights

Certainly there is no shortage of outdoor lights from which to select, there are patio, coach, pole, string and bollard lights to name a handful. If you are attracted to a specific style of outdoor light you might want to start with that, but verify it really matches the style of your home.

Landscape lights serve a variety of reasons, for some users outdoor lights are meant to be multi functional however for others these lights are selected for only one function. The key reasons they are used is for security, for increased visibility at night, to highlight areas of the yard, as well as for overall appearance. Whatever your reason there are a couple of things to take into consideration before you make a decision.

One more issue to take into account before selecting lighting is the maintenance and installation that will be involved. If you are lucky to have plenty of money this might not be as much of a concern as you can easily get a professional to complete the job right. However if you are doing this on a budget this will have an impact. The installation will be different depending on what kind of lighting you choose. There are three basic types, high-voltage, low-voltage and solar.

Lights that are low-voltage should be connected and wired to the home’s electrical circuit. There are benefits associated with this style of system. Low-voltage lights are less difficult to set up than high-voltage lights and involve the use of smaller trenches in the ground. Plus low-voltage lights merely use twelve volts of electricity.

Lights that are high-voltage require a separate electrical circuit which needs to be hooked up by a licensed professional. Of course high-voltage lights are a pricier choice. They will use more power, but the benefit is they can handle a higher number of lights without causing a drop in voltage, and they are possibly better if you are planning to expand your outdoor lighting in the long run.

Solar powered lights are the easiest type to set up because these lights do not have to be wired. This also means they do not cost anything to use after the lamps themselves are purchased. Unfortunately this type may not function as well in specific regions of the country. When they do not have access to adequate light from the sun during the day these lights will not work very well.
